Strasbourg at Christmas is spectacular, and busy. Today you do it differently.

One of you pedals. The other is carried. A minica cargo e-bike has a cosy box at the front, and that is your seat: a blanket over your knees, the city rolling towards you, nothing to carry and nothing to navigate. The electric assist does the hard work.

The day ends in one of the most beautiful buildings in the city: the Bains Municipaux, opened in 1908 and designed down to the door handles by the architect Fritz Beblo.

Carried through Christmas. That is the whole idea.

The route · 12 km

Five stops, more than a century of Strasbourg history.

Mulled wine on a rooftop, welcome and a short minica practice

Built in the mid-19th century, the Manufactory rolled cigars and cigarettes for more than 150 years, until 2010. Its great pink-sandstone halls now live a second life as an art school, workshops and creative spaces.

    Place de la République

The imperial Neustadt, listed with the Grande Île as a UNESCO World Heritage Site

After 1871 Strasbourg became German, and the Kaiserplatz was laid out here as the heart of the new imperial city. The Palais du Rhin, the library and the theatre face one another across a garden; since 2017 the Neustadt has been a World Heritage Site together with the Grande-Île.

    Parc Contades

A green pause and a photo, away from the market crowds

Strasbourg's oldest public park takes its name from Marshal de Contades, governor of Alsace, who had it laid out in 1764. Its avenues of tall trees now border the Synagogue of Peace.

    Château de Pourtalès

An 18th-century château in an English-style park, a cheese platter for two

Built in the 18th century in the Robertsau, the château takes its name from the Pourtalès family. Countess Mélanie de Pourtalès, a figure of the Second Empire court, received the high society of late-19th-century Europe here.

    Les Bains Municipaux

A guided visit of the 1908 monument, a hot tea, then the treatment you choose

Built from 1904 to 1908 by the architect Fritz Beblo, the Bains bring together two pools, Roman steam rooms and Art Nouveau marble and ceramics. Restored from 2019 to 2021, they have regained all their splendour.

1908

A palace for everyone's wellbeing

First imagined in 1879, when Strasbourg was German, the baths were driven by mayor Otto Back. The design chosen in 1904 was built by 1908.

Marble, English ceramic, an obsession with light, even a stained-glass window after Hokusai's wave: for Fritz Beblo the baths were a total work of art.

Restored from 2019 to 2021, they remain what they have always been: a place where all Strasbourgers meet.

Good to know

  • · One of you rides and the other sits in the box. You can swap at the château if you are both comfortable.
  • · The route is flat and mostly on cycleways; on a few short stretches you walk beside the bike.
  • · Dress warmly — gloves and a hat make a difference in December.
  • · The Bains require a swimsuit in the wellness areas and flip-flops everywhere; shorts are not allowed and towels are not provided.
  • · If the day is unsafe — ice or a storm — we reschedule it.
