Family Cargo Bike Comparison 2026: Where the minica Actually Sits
Published 5 August 2026 · 6 min read

Choosing a family cargo bike in France in 2026 means comparing machines that look similar on a showroom floor but behave very differently on a school run. We put the minica and minica pet next to the models buyers shortlist most often — Douze, Gaya, Urban Arrow and Babboe — and compared the numbers that matter.
Three body styles, three different rides
Front-box trikes (minica, Babboe Curve) put children in front of you, low and visible, with two wheels at the front for stability at a standstill — the easiest format if you are loading kids and shopping alone. Front-box biporteurs (Douze, Urban Arrow) keep two wheels and ride more like a long bicycle: quicker in traffic, less forgiving when stopped. Longtails (Gaya) are the lightest and cheapest, carrying passengers behind the rider — nimble, but with a lower payload ceiling.
Price: where the minica lands
At €3,999 pre-book (instead of €4,999), the minica sits between the entry-level longtails and the premium biporteurs. Gaya's Original Long starts around €2,800 and the Incroyable Long around €3,400, but both are longtails with a 170 kg total load limit. Douze runs €4,950–€7,200+, Urban Arrow €5,000–€8,000+, and Babboe €4,400–€5,100. For a front-box trike with dual motors and 300 kg total capacity, the minica undercuts every comparable box bike in the table.
Motor and battery: torque is only half the story
Douze and Urban Arrow use single mid-drives at 85 N·m and 50–85+ N·m respectively; Babboe uses a Yamaha unit around 70 N·m; Gaya relies on a 50 N·m rear hub. The minica takes a different route with dual motors delivering 80–100 N·m combined and an 800 Wh battery — the largest in this comparison alongside Urban Arrow's top configuration. On paper Gaya claims 70–100 km, but that figure comes from a lighter bike carrying less. With 800 Wh behind a 60–80 km claim, the minica leaves headroom for the hills, headwinds and full boxes that flatten optimistic range numbers in real use.
Payload and family capacity
This is the clearest separation in the table. The minica's 300 kg maximum total load is the highest listed, ahead of Urban Arrow (250–275 kg), Babboe and Douze Hêta (200–250 kg), Douze V2 (~205 kg) and Gaya (170 kg). If you carry two children plus a week of shopping, or a child and a dog, payload matters more than peak torque. minica pet is built specifically for that mixed load: one child and one animal in the same box.
Gearing, frame and wheels
The minica uses a Sturmey-Archer automatic 2-speed hub — no shifting to think about while balancing a loaded box at a junction. Douze offers derailleur or Enviolo, Urban Arrow and Babboe use Enviolo CVT, and Gaya a 7-speed. Frames are aluminium across the board except Babboe's steel Curve/Go, which adds weight. Wheel formats are largely 20" or mixed 20"/26"; the minica keeps 20" front and rear for a low load floor.
So which one should you buy?
If budget dominates and you carry one child, a Gaya longtail is hard to beat. If you want a fast, sporty biporteur and the budget is open, Douze or Urban Arrow deliver. If you want a stable front-box trike that stands up on its own, carries the most weight in this comparison, and costs meaningfully less than the other box bikes, the minica is the value case — especially at the €3,999 pre-book price.
