Between packed pedestrian streets and impossible city-centre parking, the logistics question comes up fast: how do you actually get around the market without losing an hour before you've even started?
The city-centre problem in December
December turns Grande Île into one enormous open-air market spread across roughly a dozen different squares. Cars are practically unusable — parking is scarce and expensive, and streets are closed to traffic. The tram drops visitors at a handful of fixed stops, but doesn't reach every corner of the market.
What an e-bike changes in winter
Contrary to what you'd expect, riding an e-bike in Strasbourg in winter is comfortable over short distances — the electric assist limits effort, and with it, the sweat that usually makes cold weather uncomfortable. Bring gloves and a warm jacket, book a slot in late morning or early afternoon to make the most of the daylight, and keep in mind that the market squares themselves are often closed to cyclists during peak hours — the bike is best used to connect the zones between them, not to ride through the markets directly.
