Where to Rent a Bike in Strasbourg: Four Options Compared

Strasbourg is France's most cycle-friendly city, and it shows in how many ways there are to rent a bike here. The city's own service, independent rental shops, app-unlocked free-floating bikes and hotel bikes solve completely different problems. Here is how to choose, whether you are staying three hours, a weekend or three months.
The four ways to rent a bike in Strasbourg
First, Vélhop, the rental service run by the Strasbourg Eurométropole, whose main counter sits inside the railway station on level −1, under the great glass roof. Second, the independent rental shops in the city centre, ours among them. Third, free-floating bikes unlocked with an app. Fourth, whatever bike your hotel or apartment lends out.
None is better in the abstract. Three things decide it: how long you are staying, how far you plan to ride, and how much time you are willing to lose at pick-up.
Vélhop: built for staying weeks, not days
Vélhop is the public service, designed first for residents and students: a classic bike by the month, the semester or the year, at a public rate that is hard to beat over a long stay. The station counter opens Monday to Friday 8am–6pm and Saturday 9am–6pm.
If you are moving to Strasbourg, start there. If you land on a Sunday morning for two days of sightseeing, the opening hours and the lack of pedal assistance on most of the fleet become obvious fast.
Independent shops: for a day, a weekend or a ride out of town
This is what shops like ours are for: a bike adjusted to your height, a helmet and a lock handed over the counter, a route map, and someone who knows the city telling you which way to go. Pedal assistance changes what the trip can be: the Alsace wine route, the Rhine and Kehl, the villages beyond the ring road turn into an afternoon rather than an expedition. It is also the only category where you will find a cargo bike, a trike or a child trailer — and a person you can actually reach during the rental.
Free-floating and hotel bikes: the stopgap
Free-floating bikes are ideal for a ten-minute hop between two appointments: take one, leave it, book nothing. They are a poor fit for a full day — hourly cost, unknown battery, no fitting, and nothing to be done if the bike quits fifteen kilometres out.
A hotel bike works for a loop around town, when there are enough of them and one fits you. Ask before you arrive: in most places two or three bikes shared between forty rooms are gone by mid-morning.
Where you collect the bike decides your day
In Strasbourg the question is not only where to rent, but where to pick up. The historic centre is an island: the closer your starting point is to the station and the Grande Île, the less time you spend getting onto protected cycle paths.
Our shop is at 4 Rue du Faubourg-de-Saverne, a few minutes' walk from Strasbourg station: step off the train, walk, ride away. Open Monday to Friday 9.30am–6.30pm and Saturday to Sunday 10am–7pm, with French, English and German spoken at the counter.
What bike rental costs in Strasbourg in 2026
For sightseeing, budget €18 to €40 a day depending on whether the bike is electric. With us: €18 per 8 hours classic, €29 per 8 hours or €39 for 24 hours electric, €75 for 2 days, €89 for 3 days and €145 for a week — a little over €20 a day across seven days. The two-person electric cargo bike is €59 for 4 hours.
One simple rule: staying longer than a month, the public service wins on price. For one to seven days, an independent shop costs a bit more per hour and saves far more of your time — and with us cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pick-up, which matters when the Alsace forecast is undecided.
