In the footsteps of Argentoratum
Around 12 BC, Rome set up a military camp on an island in the Ill: Argentoratum. This walk follows the camp's outline beneath the medieval city, from its straight streets to the remains of its wall.

The line between stops is indicative: follow the pedestrian streets.

Rue des Hallebardes
A straight street in the heart of the island: the Roman camp's grid still shows in the regular streets around the cathedral.

Rue du Dôme
Its line echoes one of the camp's main roads; the Roman wall ran just to the north.

Place de la Cathédrale
The cathedral stands on the highest point of the former camp, a site held sacred since antiquity.

Place Saint-Étienne
A quiet square at the camp's eastern corner: digs beneath Saint-Étienne church uncovered barracks of the Roman Eighth Legion. The remains are underground, not on display.

Beneath the palace, the archaeological museum tells Argentoratum's story through objects, stelae and inscriptions.
