Where to pick up an electric bike in Strasbourg

Strasbourg works along one simple axis: the railway station, the Grande Île, then the protected cycle paths running out to the Rhine, the Orangerie park and the vineyards. The closer your pick-up point sits to that axis, the less time you lose.

Our station is at 4 rue du Faubourg-de-Saverne, a five-minute walk from Strasbourg railway station: step off the train and you are on a cycle path within a quarter of an hour. The Eurométropole's Vélhop counter is inside the station itself, on level −1 under the great glass roof. Free-floating bikes have no station at all — they sit wherever the last rider left them, which is handy for ten minutes and risky for a full day.

A useful yardstick: from the station, Petite France is seven minutes by bike, the cathedral ten, the Orangerie park fifteen, and Kehl on the German side about half an hour along the Rhine path.

Electric bike rental prices in Strasbourg in 2026

At VéloRouge an e-bike is €29 for 8 hours (9:30am–6:30pm) and €39 for 24 hours. Beyond that: €75 for 2 days, €89 for 3 days and €145 for a week, a little over €20 a day. The Cool Cargo e-bike for two is €59 for 4 hours, and a classic city bike is €18 for 8 hours.

Every rate includes a helmet, a lock, a route map, the bike adjusted to your height and a fully charged battery. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pick-up — which matters when Alsatian weather cannot decide between sun and showers.

Across the city, an e-bike day costs roughly €25 to €45. A much lower price almost always hides an extra: a helmet sold separately, a large deposit, or a battery shared between two rentals on the same day.

Vélhop, free-floating, independent shop or hotel bike

Vélhop is the public service run by the Eurométropole, built for residents and students: unbeatable by the month, semester or year, but most of the fleet is mechanical and the station counter closes on Sundays.

Free-floating bikes suit a short hop between appointments. Over a full day the hourly cost adds up, the remaining charge is unknown, and nobody comes to fetch you if the bike stops fifteen kilometres from the centre.

A hotel bike is fine for a loop around town, provided one is still free in your size: two or three bikes shared between forty rooms go early.

The independent shop is the only option that combines a full battery, a fitted bike, a helmet, a lock and a phone number that answers during the rental. That is what counts the moment you leave the Grande Île.

How much range each route needs

Assistance up to 25 km/h changes Alsatian distances. A battery charged in the morning comfortably covers a visitor's day: the Petite France–Neustadt–Orangerie loop fits inside 20 km, the ride to Kehl and the Jardin des Deux Rives inside 25 km, and the Wine Route via Obernai runs 60 to 70 km.

In practice it is leaving town that justifies the motor. The flat, compact centre is fine on an €18 classic bike; the moment you aim for the Rhine, the Alsatian villages, or a day out with friends riding at different speeds, assistance keeps the group together.

Booking at the right moment

Electric bikes are the first category to sell out: spring weekends, the summer months, long weekends and the Christmas market. Booking online takes a minute and holds the bike in your name for the hour you chose.

Out of season, walking in usually works — but on a December Sunday morning, arriving without a booking often means leaving on a classic bike instead.
